The Herbs I Use
My product names are usually not only simple but descriptive. Some of them make clear the herbs that are used, for example, .Rosemary Rejuvenation. or .White Lavender..
Some of the herbs I use most extensively in my creams are comfrey*, calendula and Lavender. All these herbs have been tested for centuries and are proven to be of great value and comfort to skin conditions. Most products have a complete list of ingredients on the labels in easy-to-read form.
A little about Comfrey - A careful look at many skin-care products in the grocery and drug store will show you that "allantoin. is often an ingredient. The reason is that .allantoin. is what is called the .active ingredient. of the comfrey plant, which has been proven to promote cell regeneration, be anti-itch and anti-bacterial. Our forefathers used the comfrey plant for such things, as well as to set bones.
Many plants contain allantoin, but because of its high protein and mineral content, we believe comfrey (the entire plant) to be among the most healing for skin problems. We do not use an extract from the plant; we ascribe to the school of thought that use of the entire plant balances the needed healing properties, and makes reaction to the active component less likely.
It is not possible to know (by simply reading the label) which products on the market today contain the plant extract and which contain a chemically produced allantoin.
We know of no other company which makes products from plants grown in their own gardens. We are proud to use what we grow as often as possible!
Other companies may have profit as their bottom line; my bottom line is healthy skin for those who suffer. That's why I include larger amounts of healing herbs and oils in my recipes than any other products on the market, and why I keep my prices as low as possible, despite the fact that I use very expensive and carefully extracted plant oils. There is no comparison of what I make to other products, because I do my own research and formulary, based on two major things: my knowledge of the herbs and their effectiveness, and formularies of dermatological, herbal and medical experts.
I am not a medical doctor. I am simply a mother and grandmother who has learned through personal study and application over more than thirty years. I like to think of myself as a bit of a throwback to the mountain women of old who went into the woods and found an herb to fix just about any problem you might have - except old age! (Let's work on that together!)
*Comfrey (Symphytum officinale), used topically, is considered safe and is coming back into popular use. Rarely comfrey, taken orally in large amounts over long periods, can have hepatotoxic effects. The carcinogenic danger is about that of a peanut butter sandwich (B.N. Ames, R. Magaw, and L.S. Gold, 1987, .Ranking of Possible Carcinogens,. Science, Vol. 236.)
